Used Pontoon Boats - New Kieffer Marine Now Open in Portage Lakes

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Ross and Laurie Kieffer and pontoon boat mascot Maddie prepare to set sail

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. News out of Portage Lakes’ Leighton’s Boat House is now Kieffer Marine.

Ross and Laurie Kieffer, longtime owners of Burch’s Landing and the new owners of Leighton’s on East Reservoir have Portage Lakes ties in their background. Ross and Laurie arrived in the Portage Lakes from Canton by accident. In 1974, they were driving around the Portage Lakes area and spotted a lakefront home for sale. On a whim they made an offer and to their surprise it was accepted.

Ross’s ties to Portage Lakes can be traced back to 1920 when his maternal grandfather, John Ross, an employee of the M O’Neil Company attended a company picnic on Long Lake.

A photo of the employees and guests was taken at Long Lake Park on July 12, 1920. Grandpa Ross was photographed with Ross’s mom, Charlotte, then 4 years old, in his arms. The photo hangs in a place of honor at the new establishment. Among other photographs displayed is one of a 1948 GarWood boat on Turkeyfoot Lake with Ross’s parents, Ted and Charlotte Kieffer seated in the boat. Charlotte was pregnant with Ross in the photo.

Their ownership of Burch’s Landing came about in 1982. Ross was on his OK Potato Chips delivery route and noticed a For Sale sign in the window at Burch’s. He stopped to inquire and talked with the men wanting to sell the establishment. He was a little hesitant after talking with them. He laughed when he recalled he had been reading - Making it Rich in Real Estate and thought it best to check the Summit County courthouse records on the ownership of the facility.

He discovered that Mrs. Ethel Burch, who was living in Florida, was the true owner and the men were leasing the facility. Ross contacted Mrs. Burch regarding the sale. She was interested in selling and offered to help by carrying the mortgage until they were able to secure a bank loan.

Laurie and Ross fondly recalled the trust and faith Mrs. Burch had in selling to them. After securing the business, they left their jobs - Ross with OK Potato Chips and Laurie an art teacher - devoting full time to their new business.

Originally, Burch’s Landing opened in 1920 as Edgewater Barbeque and in 1936 an addition was built to house canoe rentals.

When the Kieffer’s bought Burch’s it was primarily a canoe rental business, 30 wood canoes were included in the inventory along with their purchase. The wood canoes leaked and were eventually replaced with aluminum canoes. Kieffers survived the early years by selling Christmas trees, restoring Chris Craft wood boats, offering a general gift shop along with rentals and boat sales.

Of historic interest, Burch’s still hold the license for the oldest continuous operating Canoe Livery in the state of Ohio.

Initially they only could afford to purchase one pontoon boat to sell. If it didn’t sell then it was offered as a rental the next season. They spoke with genuine appreciation of the trusting people who enabled them to move ahead, Mrs. Burch and later a marine dealer who placed 2-3 pontoons on consignment to help them along.

As their business continued to grow they saw some drawbacks to Burch’s. — limited room for service work- much of it done outside; and no inside area for boat sales. They often looked over at Leighton’s and marveled at their spacious surroundings and what they might do if they had the larger facility.

Going back in time, again, there is also a connection to Leighton’s.

When Ross was a youngster his parents often visited with friends, Elton and Ellie Mollett who had a cottage on Whyem Drive. Dr. Hoge also a Whyem Drive resident owned a 1956 Chris Craft boat and invited Ross and his sister to join his four girls to learn how to water ski. Ross fondly remembered the ski morning breakfasts of hot chocolate and cinnamon toast. He said the cinnamon toast was the best ever. After skiing they would stop at Leighton’s West on Mud Lake for gas. Owner, Lenny Leighton always treated the kids to a 5 cent bottle of Coke or Grapette.

Ross recalled that the bottles were in the “old” Coke machine chests where the bottles were on a rail. You deposited your money and guided the selected bottle to the end of the rail for release. That was a highlight of the ski trip. Ross never dreamed that one day he would own Leighton’s on East Reservoir.

Their plans for the newly acquired boat house includes bringing the nautical gift shop over to Kieffer Marine. At the new facility they are able to offer various sizes of pontoons for rent, dock/slip rentals, outboard motor service of Honda, Yahama, Nissan/Tohatsu.

Kieffer Marine now can service I/o’s and inboards and offer indoor and outdoor storage. Year round in/out service and marine accessories. They will continue to sell Sweetwater, Aqua Patio, Sanpan pontoons.

They are proud to have, Wayne Smith, their mechanic at Burch’s for 15 years and Carl Lange, long time employee of Leighton’s to continue working with them at Kieffer Marine. The Keiffers have one daughter, Brooke, who grew up in the business and now resides in Florida. I’m sure during the winter months Brooke will be seeing quite a bit of her parents.

Keiffer Marine is located at 252 Portage Lakes Drive, hours are 10-6, 7 days a week. They will close after Thanksgiving and reopen April 1.

Burch’s Landing is now in their memory book and they are looking for a tenant to rent the facility. Thanks to Carol Eubank, The Suburbanite for this.

Used Pontoon Boats - Lake of the Ozarks September In-water Clearance Boat Show

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. The 4th Annual September In-water Clearance Boat Show is all ready to go in Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.

Between the million-dollar-on-up luxury cruisers and the need-for-speed performance boats down to the fun-in-the-sun pontoon boats, deck boats and personal watercraft carriers, the lake is known for being able to offer it all.

At Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Assocation’s 4th Annual September In-water Clearance Boat Show, almost every marina in the area is expected to bring out their best boats for display.

Over 30 marinas are expected to fill the slips and line the docks at the Horny Toad Marina representing almost every major boat manufacturer and every taste and style.

Cruisers and yachts can be loaded with every amenity and custom-ordered to match the owner’s flair.

Owning a top-of-the-line boat cruiser is about a lifestyle.

Vessels can be decked out amenities you would typically find in a home. Pergo floors, cherry-finished cabinets, Corian countertops, 42-inch flatscreen TVs, leather upholstery, heating, air conditioning and cedar-lined closets are all details that can make the owners feel at home while abroad.

Meanwhile, high-performance runabouts can be tinkered with to be extra fast and flashy. On the other end of budgets, there will be plenty of used vessels and personal watercrafts at the boat show.

And since all the boats are in the water, it’s the perfect opportunity to test-drive that dream-ride before purchase.

Marine dealers often take customers on test drives around the lake. Once back in the slip and tied up, the customer can hop to the next boat and take it for a spin to compare.

On shore, booths will line the restaurant’s boardwalk filled with everything to accessorize the boat, lift it up, keeping the driver safe or building a dock.

LOMDA’s September Boat Show is on Sept. 5-7.
Boat show hours are: 1-7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Sunday.

Cost is $5 for adults; children 12 years and under are free.
Parking will be free at the Horny Toad Entertainment Complex by land and water.
The Horny Toad is located at the 7-mile marker or on Bittersweet Road, off Horseshoe Bend Parkway. For more information, contact LOMDA at 573-480-2300. Thanks to Lake Sun Leader for this,Flashy, fast, family boats offered at boat show - Camdenton, MO - Lake Sun Leader

Bayliner Boats - Brunswick Offers to buy Olympic Boat Centers

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Yacht and motorboat manufacturer Brunswick has offered to buy Redmond-based Olympic Boat Centers out of bankruptcy for $48 million, but…

Olympic Boat and its affiliates run 20 dealerships from British Columbia to California, making it “one of the largest, if not the largest, dealership in the world” for Brunswick, according to court papers filed in Woodland Hills, Calif., where Olympic filed for Chapter 11 protection last month.

On Wednesday, a bankruptcy-court judge is expected to schedule a Sept. 23 auction of Olympic’s assets and spell out procedures for other bidders to compete with the Brunswick proposal, said David Shemano, a Los Angeles attorney representing Olympic’s unsecured creditors.

Brunswick, whose brands include Bayliner, Maxum, Meridian and Mercury Marine, already owns 12 percent of Olympic Boat’s parent company.

The remainder is mostly owned by private-equity firm The Riverside Co., of Cleveland, which bought majority control of Olympic in 1998 and launched an expansion push.

The $48 million offer, detailed in a motion filed by Olympic’s attorneys last week, would provide $47 million to secured creditor GE Commercial Distribution Finance. But it would leave less than $1 million for bankruptcy costs and payments to other creditors, Shemano wrote in a court filing.

He called Brunswick’s offer “less than adequate.”

Olympic reported assets between $10 million and $50 million and debts between $50 million and $100 million. We will keep you posted on how this all plays out.

Used Pontoon Boats - What to expect at a Boat Show

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. It doesn’t matter if you were born on the water or if you just started lake boating with your buddies, a boat show may just be the perfect, fun outing for you to go to.

Boat shows are great for new and experienced boaters alike

Boat shows are held all over the country, from Seattle to Chicago to Miami, and they include not only boats, but seminars, new product displays and more.

If you are interested in seeing a boat show near you, ask your local lake officials where and when the nearest show is coming.

Here is what most boat shows cover:

1. Plenty of Boat Selection: At it’s core, a boat show is in fact a showing off of boats, meaning you can shuttle around the water checking out some of the most prestigious, shiny new boats from other boaters. The bigger boat shows could have upwards of a hundred or more boats while smaller shows may have 10 or 20 boats. The boaters that are displaying their boats often prepare for this event for some time before hand, to make sure their vehicle is clean and ready. If you want to have your boat displayed in a show, talk to the event hosts well in advance.

2. Boat Seminars: Most boat shows also have seminars for different things relating to boats. Seminars may inform you of the best ways to clean certain parts of your boat or may include guest speaker appearances. The seminars are either held on a bigger boat docked on the water or on shore.

3. New product give-a ways: Retailers from the boating industry flock to boat shows. Since boaters navigate their way to boat shows when they are around, retailers find it the best place to sell boating equipment, parts and boating accessories. Many of these retailers do raffles, free product give-a-ways and more. If you are looking for equipment, a boat show is often a good place to go.

Boat shows are held all over the nation and are the place to be for interested boaters. Free entertainment, great boats, boating apparel, food and more are often available.

It isn’t uncommon for thousands of people to attend the boating events. The shows bring together boaters with similar interests and sometimes last several days. Some of the bigger boat shows in the United States include: The Seattle Boat Show, the Fort Lauderdale International Show, and the Atlanta Boat Show. Thanks to;Boat Shows - Lake Boating - DONE

The boat show will attract more than 150 exhibitors, and 200 boats will be on display in the water and onshore at ADIMSC.

Ahmed Al Romaithi, Member of the Executive Committee of ADMISC, said the show would reflect the vast amount of marine-related development and infrastructure planned or under construction for the emirate.

Saeed Hareb, Chairman of organiser Knotika Holding, said: “Abu Dhabi is an obvious choice for a boat show as it is the richest of the oil-laden United Arab Emirates, has a large expatriate population and is aiming to transform itself into a global tourist destination.

“Abu Dhabi benefits from a cosmopolitan outlook in a politically stable country with a liberal economy.

“Diverse sports and leisure pursuits are part of the active lifestyle residents enjoy in Abu Dhabi and the recently announced 2009 Formula 1, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Ferrari Theme Park and Warner Brothers Theme Park are all situated on the Yas Island, a 2,500 hectare development.

Forbes magazine recently reported Abu Dhabi as the world’s richest city. Responsible for more than 90 per cent of the UAE’s oil production, Abu Dhabi possesses the fourth largest oil reserves in the world.

According to media reports, Abu Dhabi has an investment fund exceeding $800 billion (Dh2.9 trillion) with more than $140bn in government and privately-funded development projects under way in Abu Dhabi.
