Bayliner Boats - Brunswick Offers to buy Olympic Boat Centers

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Yacht and motorboat manufacturer Brunswick has offered to buy Redmond-based Olympic Boat Centers out of bankruptcy for $48 million, but…

Olympic Boat and its affiliates run 20 dealerships from British Columbia to California, making it “one of the largest, if not the largest, dealership in the world” for Brunswick, according to court papers filed in Woodland Hills, Calif., where Olympic filed for Chapter 11 protection last month.

On Wednesday, a bankruptcy-court judge is expected to schedule a Sept. 23 auction of Olympic’s assets and spell out procedures for other bidders to compete with the Brunswick proposal, said David Shemano, a Los Angeles attorney representing Olympic’s unsecured creditors.

Brunswick, whose brands include Bayliner, Maxum, Meridian and Mercury Marine, already owns 12 percent of Olympic Boat’s parent company.

The remainder is mostly owned by private-equity firm The Riverside Co., of Cleveland, which bought majority control of Olympic in 1998 and launched an expansion push.

The $48 million offer, detailed in a motion filed by Olympic’s attorneys last week, would provide $47 million to secured creditor GE Commercial Distribution Finance. But it would leave less than $1 million for bankruptcy costs and payments to other creditors, Shemano wrote in a court filing.

He called Brunswick’s offer “less than adequate.”

Olympic reported assets between $10 million and $50 million and debts between $50 million and $100 million. We will keep you posted on how this all plays out.

Bayliner Boats - Go Green Boating Products

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry.“Go Green Boating”. Everyone is well aware of the big push for more environmental friendly products and services.

These days the term “green” is pretty fashionable. From cars to cleaning products, everybody is coming out with green versions of something or other; the boating industry is no different.

There are some local businesses getting involved in the “Go Green” movement in the boating industry.

The Green Boat Supply Co. located in Lakefield. They offer the award-winning line of electric outboard motors from Torqeedo. The Travel model weighs just 12 kg including integrated battery, operates quietly and folds into a bag for easy storage. Equivalent to a 2 HP gas combustion motor, Travel produces no air emissions. No gas also means any possibility of fuel spills into the water.

The long-life battery (lithium-ion) is rechargeable in any household socket. More new products coming soon: eco-friendly marine cleaners and paints. For more information go to: http://www.greenboatsupply.com/index.html 705-652-9355.

Imagine a revived fish and bird population in your lake. Imagine your lake getting healthier every year. Imagine cleaning your boat, cottage, tools, toys, barbecues without any chemical cleaners (friendly chemicals or not), zipp, zero! Imagine all this at the same time killing bacteria in your house or cottage better than most leading chemicals or green products.

ENJO and water will make clean just about anything you can throw at it and make it bacteria free to boot! You can contribute to healthy lake environments with a 100% chemical free cleaning system.

ENJO is a series of gloves or mitts that when used with JUST WATER will clean just about anything that gathers dirt inside or outside your home or cottage, including your boat. Will easily remove mould and mildew from your boat seats, it will clean the water line from the hull; it will remove grease and stains of most foods and drinks with JUST COLD WATER. Will also remove pine tar from your patio furniture.

Imagine how good it would be for your lake if cottagers abandoned the traditional cleaning chemicals and used just water. For more information go to: http://www.enjo-canada.com Bev Robson 705-944-8974 or enjo@nexicom.net

Used Pontoon Boats - Dave Scott Wins 2008 Lake of the Ozarks Top Gun

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Driver/owner Dave Scott and throttleman Johnny Tomlinson hoist the Top Gun trophy. Scott won the top speed trophy for the sixth time after taking it five straight years from 1997-2001.

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. In what has become somewhat of a tradition, a racer with the first name of David won the 2008 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout top gun award.

From 1997 to 2001 David Scott was unbeatable in the Shootout, winning it all five years. From there Dave Villwock won the event in 2002 and ‘04 while David Callan won in ‘03 as well as ‘04-’07.

Scott took back the trophy Sunday, winning the 20th anniversary Top Gun for the fastest overall speed for the sixth time. Scott has a summer home at the 2-mile marker of the lake and said that this win meant more than any other. “(This race, and this win) is extra special, I look forward to it each year,” Scott said.

This was the first year that the event was sponsored by Captain Ron’s Bar and Grill, and also marked the first year of a new location for the course. The race was headquarters at Shooters at the 23-mile marker for its first 19 years. Racers remarked how well prepared Captain Ron’s was for the event.

“I think everyone did a great job,” Scott said. “It’s really unbelievable what they accomplished in their first year.”Scott’s winning speed of 178 mph was the first time since 2004 that no racer broke the 200 mph barrier. It was also the slowest time since Scott won in 2001 with a speed of 165.

Dr. Mike Janssen, who owns three boats for the Cutting Edge Marine team and also drives for the squad, had a theory for why the speeds were slower this year.
“The course on the first day was challenging, it narrows and you can’t see when to slow down,” Janssen said. He said by Sunday there were signs that helped the driver’s vision, which helped him improve his speed on Sunday by 15 mph.

John Caparell of San Diego, Calif., made his first trip to the Shootout. He said he was convinced to come by Ron Duggan, owner of Captain Ron’s.

Caparell said that Duggan promised a world-class event. And he delivered. Caparell had an adventure on the course when the boat’s belt broke on his first ride. After bringing it back to shore and fixing it, the belt broke a second time in the water. This time Caparell pulled up to a stranger’s dock, who loaned him tools and went to a store to get him spare parts. Caparell was amazed by this, saying that this type of friendliness is an uncommon experience.

Unlike Caparell, Jim Dorris and his wife Carolyn are Shootout veterans. Jim was a pioneer in 1995 when he was the first person to enter a pontoon boat in a high-performance division. Jim said when he started others thought it was a joke, but he has since made believers of the spectators that pontoons can speed. Dorris broke his personal best speed this year by moving at 76 mph, his previous best was 75.

Another veteran competing in the Shootout was Bryan Houpt. 2008 was Houpt’s eighth Shootout, and he said it was his favorite one so far.

Last year Houpt flipped his boat at over 100 mph while racing in the Offshore Super Series event at the Lake of the Ozarks. Although this was his first official race on the lake since that crash, he said he had no reservations.
Houpt said that “it’s not if you’re going to flip your boat, but when.” That’s why he made it a point to get back behind the wheel just a few weeks after the crash.

While many things about the event changed this year, Scott said one thing that won’t change in the future is his entrance into the shootout, despite the fact that his sponsorship by Bud Light is currently up in the air.

“We really don’t know what’s going to happen (with new ownership of Anheuser Busch),” Scott said. “I can tell you this (no matter the sponsor), Dave Scott will be back next year.” Thanks to; Alex Rubin, Lake Sun Leader for this. Used Pontoon Boats - What to expect at a Boat Show

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. It doesn’t matter if you were born on the water or if you just started lake boating with your buddies, a boat show may just be the perfect, fun outing for you to go to.

Boat shows are great for new and experienced boaters alike

Boat shows are held all over the country, from Seattle to Chicago to Miami, and they include not only boats, but seminars, new product displays and more.

If you are interested in seeing a boat show near you, ask your local lake officials where and when the nearest show is coming.

Here is what most boat shows cover:

1. Plenty of Boat Selection: At it’s core, a boat show is in fact a showing off of boats, meaning you can shuttle around the water checking out some of the most prestigious, shiny new boats from other boaters. The bigger boat shows could have upwards of a hundred or more boats while smaller shows may have 10 or 20 boats. The boaters that are displaying their boats often prepare for this event for some time before hand, to make sure their vehicle is clean and ready. If you want to have your boat displayed in a show, talk to the event hosts well in advance.

2. Boat Seminars: Most boat shows also have seminars for different things relating to boats. Seminars may inform you of the best ways to clean certain parts of your boat or may include guest speaker appearances. The seminars are either held on a bigger boat docked on the water or on shore.

3. New product give-a ways: Retailers from the boating industry flock to boat shows. Since boaters navigate their way to boat shows when they are around, retailers find it the best place to sell boating equipment, parts and boating accessories. Many of these retailers do raffles, free product give-a-ways and more. If you are looking for equipment, a boat show is often a good place to go.

Boat shows are held all over the nation and are the place to be for interested boaters. Free entertainment, great boats, boating apparel, food and more are often available.

It isn’t uncommon for thousands of people to attend the boating events. The shows bring together boaters with similar interests and sometimes last several days. Some of the bigger boat shows in the United States include: The Seattle Boat Show, the Fort Lauderdale International Show, and the Atlanta Boat Show. Thanks to;Boat Shows - Lake Boating - DONE

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Abu Dhabi will be showcased as an emerging centre for leisure as the capital hosts the first Emirates Boat Show International.

The exhibition, which will run from November 25 to 27, is being hosted by Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADMISC).

The boat show will attract more than 150 exhibitors, and 200 boats will be on display in the water and onshore at ADIMSC.

Visitors will be able to view a range of the latest leisure marine products, from multi-million dollar motor yachts to jet skis, wakeboarding boats and equipment, sailing dinghies and diving gear, marine accessories and electronics. The show will be open to trade and the public.

The boat show has also secured bookings from some of the best known international brands include Aicon, Azimuth, Bayliner, Beneteau Yachts, Cabo, Carver, Doral, Elegance, Four Winns, Gulf Craft, Hatteras, Jeanneau, Larson, Mastercraft, Maxum, Palm Marine, Princess Yachts, SeaRay, Silver Craft, Tige and Wellcraft.

Ahmed Al Romaithi, Member of the Executive Committee of ADMISC, said the show would reflect the vast amount of marine-related development and infrastructure planned or under construction for the emirate.

Saeed Hareb, Chairman of organiser Knotika Holding, said: “Abu Dhabi is an obvious choice for a boat show as it is the richest of the oil-laden United Arab Emirates, has a large expatriate population and is aiming to transform itself into a global tourist destination.

“Abu Dhabi benefits from a cosmopolitan outlook in a politically stable country with a liberal economy.

“Diverse sports and leisure pursuits are part of the active lifestyle residents enjoy in Abu Dhabi and the recently announced 2009 Formula 1, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Ferrari Theme Park and Warner Brothers Theme Park are all situated on the Yas Island, a 2,500 hectare development.

Forbes magazine recently reported Abu Dhabi as the world’s richest city. Responsible for more than 90 per cent of the UAE’s oil production, Abu Dhabi possesses the fourth largest oil reserves in the world.

According to media reports, Abu Dhabi has an investment fund exceeding $800 billion (Dh2.9 trillion) with more than $140bn in government and privately-funded development projects under way in Abu Dhabi.

Dubai International Boat Show will take place between March 3 and 7 at Dubai International Marine Club at Mina Seyahi. Thanks to; Boat show sets sail for UAE capital

Used Pontoon Boats - Lake of the Ozarks Shootout

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. All that remains is the cheering. The 20th anniversary Lake of the Ozarks Shootout comes to the WestSide for the very first time this weekend. These are not your basic pontoon boats you see on the lakes.

As the world’s fastest offshore racing machines thunder down the lake at over 200 miles per hour, and as super-charged pontoons and flashy personal water crafts rip down the course, tens of thousands of race fans will come by land and lake to see the spectacle Saturday and Sunday in the shadow of the Hurricane Deck Bridge.

The race course is a two-mile straightaway beginning at the bridge and continuing along the southeast bluffs en route to the finish line at the 33.5-MM.
The Missouri Water Patrol, with an armada of a dozen boats on duty at the event, will enforce a no-wake rule from late morning until 5 p.m. both days for a three and a half to four-mile stretch of the lake in the area of the Shootout.
And while there’s plenty of Shootout activity beginning Thursday and Friday, the boat races get underway following opening ceremonies Saturday at 10 a.m. Sunday’s race schedule begins at 11 a.m., with heats running through approximately 5 p.m. each day.

As of Monday morning organizers reported 22 online racing boat registrations, with three times that number guaranteed slips at race headquarters.

“There will probably be a bunch of last-minute registrations,” according to Erin Boomsma, a key Shootout committee member. “I think some of the racers want to keep their plans under the radar until the weekend.”

Ron Duggan, the Captain Ron’s Bar & Grill owner who just days before last Christmas won the right to host the event after its swan song at Shooter’s 21 in Osage Beach last August, said the past eight months have flown by.
“It’s been the fastest eight months of my life, I believe,” Duggan said late last week. “So much in the beginning was just trying to figure out what we should be doing — understanding what they’ve done in the past and making contacts with sponsors and people who had knowledge of the event.”

One of the first things he did was to establish a Shootout committee comprised of people across the lake area, but with a healthy dose of WestSiders. Duggan said one of the happiest surprises has been the number of people willing to take on various jobs and the confidence with which they’ve followed them through.
“They’ve taken it and run with it,” Duggan said. “And, I’ve enjoyed getting to know them and work closely with them — they’ve really stepped up to the plate.”
Another surprise Duggan admitted was how much he realized he didn’t know about the Shootout, “…. and the different things that go on that you just don’t think about,” he said.

The Shootout is without question the biggest event to ever hit the WestSide.

Its success will be measured against 19 years as the Lake Rescue Shootout, hosted and organized by lake area fire districts. Fire/rescue personnel will still be a big part of this weekend’s races, providing logistical, communication and public safety resources.

A major element of the Shootout that remains constant is the event’s benevolence. Lake area fire and rescue departments, American Red Cross, and new this year, Lake of the Ozarks Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts of America and others will receive funding based on their level of participation.
Without being specific, Duggan said he hopes to be able to at least match last year’s Shootout contribution of approximately $80,000 to the organizations.
A 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation was formed by Duggan specifically for the Shootout.

“A lot of it [the final tally] will depend on t-shirt and hat sales, but we’re hoping that our total contribution will be eighty-thousand or more,” he said.
When asked what his comfort level was [on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being sublime], Duggan said he was at 8-8.5. But, he said he might get to a 9 by this weekend.

“The only reason I didn’t say 10 is the unknown,” he said. Thanks to;Shootout arrives this weekend - Laurie, MO - WestSide Star

Bayliner Boats - Boat Review, Bayliner 340 Cruiser

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Bayliner’s 340 Cruiser is their flagship cruiser built to get more people into the cruising lifestyle.

Her list of standard features fulfills the needs of the cruising lifestyle, while her options allow you to step it up a notch and customize your fun. Bayliner has gone to great lengths to make sure this cruiser is not what your father had.

The 340 Cruiser is an evolution on the previous model year’s 325 with few changes other than the tried and true Bayliner price. Still a bargain, this latest offering from US Marine shows the company’s dedication to improving product styling, finishing quality and confirming that this is not your father’s Bayliner anymore.

Bayliner 340 Cruiser - Key Features

  • Bimini Top: w/Boot
  • Aft L-Shaped Lounger: Converts to Sunlounger
  • Carpet Runner
  • Double-Wide Helm Seat: Includes Rotating Feature & Flip-Up Bolster
  • Entertainment Center: w/Sink, Faucet & Storage Cabinet
  • Transom Shower
  • 100% Polypropylene Carpeting: Solution-Dyed, Stain & Fade-Resistant

Bayliner Cruiser 340 -
Captain’s Report

Cockpit Layout

The single level cockpit is both spacious and comfortable for entertaining a group, or for letting each member of the family enjoy their own space. The large L-shaped lounger fills the starboard and wraps around the stern to the port side walk-through. The table quickly converts this into a large space to enjoy the sun or sleep topside on a pleasant summer night. To port is an entertainment center for mixing beverages and serving snacks. Our test model included a granite countertop, sink and handy cockpit refrigerator/freezer combination. One feature it lacked was storage at the wet bar. Our captain found the battery switch and power switches located near this center to be a plus, as you can reach them easily from the swim platform. Speaking of the swim platform, you do have hot and cold water at the swim shower to rinse off before coming back on board.

At the Helm

The helm shows the class of a more expensive yacht with burlwood accents and space to add on more flat panel electronics. Tilt power-assisted rack and pinion steering is standard with the tilt wheel. Electronic/hydraulic trim tabs are also standard. Our test captain felt the standard throttle and shift controls were a bit dated and preferred a more modern system.

In the Cabin

Moving inside, the salon takes advantage of light and air in this spacious design. The two large tables allow your guests the choice to dine inside or al-fresco all together. The forward table and benches convert into a roomy berth, and a double berth is aft. The galley is to starboard with solid surface counters and a two burner electric cooktop. You do have ample storage for dry goods around the galley. Other standard features include a microwave oven, Norcold refrigerator/freezer and stainless steel sink. The wet head has a full fiberglass liner for easy maintenance, and the design inside is typical of cruisers with a marine head with macerator and a vanity.

Specifications

The Bayliner Cruiser 340 measures 35 feet length overall. Her beam is 11 feet 6 inches, and hull draft measures 2 feet 2 inches with the drives up and 3 feet 5 inches with the drives fully deployed. This model has a standard dry weight of 12,900 lbs. Fuel capacity is 175 gallons and fresh water capacity is 40 gallons.

Testing

Our test captain found this model to perform better with a pair of 300 hp MerCruiser 350 MPIs with Bravo III drives. She is on plane in 10.1 seconds and up to 30 mph in 16.5 seconds. With four people on board and ¾ tank of fuel, she has a cruising speed of 16.2 mph for a range of 143 miles at 3000 rpm. Top measured speed was 41.4 mph at 4500 rpm.

New Features

For 2008, the Bayliner Cruiser 340 had a few new features. Those included a new color choice of a black hull side. A Sirius satellite capable radio is now available as well as a stereo upgrade with a full range of speakers. You may also order Sunbrella canvas packages for more protection and overnight camping aboard. Cockpit upholstery and design has been enhanced, and you also have some new cabin interiors over previous years. Thanks to;Bayliner 340 Cruiser Overview | BoatTEST.com

Used Pontoon Boats - Boat Radiation Detectors Being Tested

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Its codename is “Crawdad” and it involves pontoon boats, computers and lots of technology.

Once it’s perfected, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will have a new tool against terrorists: boat-mounted radiation detectors that are being tested in Savannah River Site’s four-mile-long L-Lake.

The strategic objective is to minimize the risk small boats could be used to smuggle radiological or nuclear materials into the United States, said Matthew Graviss, the project’s testing program manager.

Using both government and privately developed technology from many locations, Homeland Security opted to test the devices this summer on L-Lake due to its secure setting and the availability of a variety of nuclear materials.

“We’re doing a lot of repeat exercises to gauge consistency,” Graviss said Wednesday, during a tour of the test site and its portable buildings packed with computers at Savannah River National Laboratory.

Currently, radiation detectors are in use at ports, U.S. Customs offices and other locations, but they involve mostly hand-held and backpack detectors.

The new boat-mounted devices will be used more widely by the Coast Guard, local and federal law enforcement officers and shipping terminals.

Although range and sensitivity will vary, the detectors under development will be useful in seeking out - and also defining - nuclear materials from afar, said Rudy Goetzman, Savannah River National Laboratory’s program manager.

“It will be sensitive enough to not only see and detect radiation sources, but also detect particular components of the source - the exact isotope,” Goetzman said.

He did not have cost figures for the project.

The tests include the use of pontoon boats with radiation detectors that scan “targets,” which are smaller boats containing varying amounts of nuclear materials.

Data is beamed back to computer monitors via wireless towers and everything is checked with global positioning systems to insure performance consistency.

“In this setting, we can tell if what’s supposed to happen is actually happening,” Goetzman said.

Once the equipment is perfected, outside groups including law enforcement professionals and others will be brought in to field test the equipment again, Graviss said.

“That way, we get to understand not only the technical performance, but the users’ perspectives as well,” he said.

The testing program is being conducted by the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, a division of Homeland Security. Thanks to; OnlineAthens.com | News | Boat-mounted radiation detectors being tested at Savannah River Site 08/14/08
