Bayliner Boats - Life on the water in Las Vegas

75 ft Bayliner

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Living on the water in Las Vegas.

Waterfront property is hard to come by in the Las Vegas Valley. That is why some cherish their floating homes. With no private lands in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area for building houses or cabins, locals shack up in the next best thing: houseboats. There’s a stretch of slips at Lake Mead Marina you could call Houseboat Alley. One covered row of barges is a veritable neighborhood overlooking Boulder Beach on one side and docked sailboats, yachts and dinghies on the other.

On a Saturday morning last month, a pudgy Jack Russell terrier, Jack, pranced across planks up and down the front steps of a few side-by-side houseboats.

Patrick Riley wrapped presents in the living room of his 75-foot Bayliner, “True 2 Life,” preparing for a friend’s birthday party later that day. He said he hasn’t missed a weekend at the lake on his boat in more than a year.

Riley, who runs a Las Vegas recycling and document destruction company, said he comes out to his houseboat, like a vacation home, for the tranquility and the community.

The dog exemplifies that sense of community. He doesn’t belong to Riley, but he wanders onto his and the other houseboats as if he belonged to them all, and he is welcome wherever he goes, Riley said. “Some of the best friends I’ve met have been out here,” said Riley, who has lived in Las Vegas for 15 years.

His first boat was a 28-foot Bayliner, “and things blew up from there,” he said. “It wasn’t big enough to spend the whole weekend in.”

So, in December, he found True 2 Life advertised online, bought it and moved it from its dock on Lake Lanier in Georgia.”Houseboats happen to you,” he said. “You see one and have to have one.”

The boat came fully stocked with an electric fireplace, Bose surround sound, washer and dryer and full kitchen — “all the creature comforts,” he said. Riley said if he didn’t have a large dog in his Las Vegas yard, he would practically live on the houseboat.

Next door, where Jack belongs, Pam and Bob Kirk cooked in their 56-foot boat, Voyager, their 10th boat and third houseboat. The couple split their year between Utah and Boulder City, and spend every other weekend on their Lake Mead houseboat in the fall.

“It’s a tough life, but somebody’s gotta do it,” said Bob Kirk, who runs a Las Vegas sewer cleaning business. The Kirks take their boat out about once a month, anchoring it in coves, but Bob Kirk comes down every Wednesday and Thursday for maintenance and to meet up with a group of other boat owners.

“It’s the greatest bunch of people I’ve ever met in my life,” he said. Pam Kirk, chopping vegetables, said the three-bedroom houseboat is so convenient all she and her husband need for a weekend is to grab the dog and drive five minutes from their house in Boulder City.

The boat is like their second home — the one with a helm in the living room.

Richard Keeley, a friend of both the Rileys and the Kirks, two years ago bought “Aqua Therapy,” a 43-foot Carver motor yacht. In winter, the marina looks as deserted as a ghost town, he said, but in the summer, Thursday to Sunday, it’s like an active city block.

Keeley, who works as a producer on the Strip, owns a house in Summerlin but said he would rather spend his nights on his floating home. “This is my backyard,” he said, motioning the lake, full of boats on a blustery afternoon. “It’s a different world. It gets me out of Vegas.”

Keeley’s deck is his front porch. His dog, Diogi, hops around the remnants of a recent party and down into the sunken living room and the bedroom with bay windows. The boat sleeps eight people, and he tells his out of town visitors if they want to come to Las Vegas, get a hotel room. On the other hand, if they want to come visit him, come to the boat. Thanks to Cassie Tomlin for this. Life on the water is a ‘different world’ than the city - Las Vegas Sun

Bayliner Boats - Tampa Boat Show Report

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from
North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Here is a report from Tampa Boat Show.

The 2008 Tampa Boat Show, which ran Sept. 5-7 at the Tampa Convention Center, reported strong sales by exhibitors and a large number of leads from the nearly 18,500 people who attended, the National Marine Manufacturers Association, which produced the show, reported in a release yesterday.

More than 600 boats were on display at the 2008 show with several vessels of all makes and sizes sold at the show, including more than 30 entry- to mid-level boats, representing millions of dollars in retail sales for local boat dealers, NMMA reported.

“We were especially pleased with the upbeat attitude of exhibitors at Tampa and were excited to learn they saw such strong sales,” said Ben Wold, executive vice president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association. “We feel good about what’s ahead and hope the sales exhibitors experienced at Tampa are a sign of things to come this show season.”

Appearances by Jonathan and Andy Hillstrand, co-captains of the commercial fishing vessel Time Bandit featured on Discovery Channel’s popular series Deadliest Catch, were a very popular draw during the event. Nearly 1,000 show-goers took the opportunity to meet the Hillstrands during four, three-hour sessions on Friday and Saturday of the show.

Robert Tronio from Sunray Marine, who sells boats by Pro-Line and Rinker, among others, said, “We were very pleased with attendee turnout and were able to close 14 deals on site – quite a lot given what we were anticipating as a result of sales having been down all summer throughout the industry.

Attendee interest levels were high even from those who weren’t quite ready to sign a contract.”

Bayliner Boats - South Lake Union Boats Afloat Show Update

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

39′ Bayliner 3988 Motor Yacht
Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. For the next few years will Boat show’s be a buyer’s market? Tough economy can mean major discounts from manufacturers.

News from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer says it will be a buyer’s market. With tightened credit and high oil and gas prices, these are hard times for some makers and sellers of boats — an item that few people, despite the Northwest waters’ allure, really need.

But that makes these good times for would-be boat buyers who can afford to plunge ahead, particularly when shows like the 2008 South Lake Union Boats Afloat Show, which opens Wednesday morning, often offer large discounts over regular prices, said several area manufacturers and brokers.

“It is a buyer’s market, no question,” said show producer Bonnie Bergquist, who also is manager of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association, a Seattle trade association.

The 31st annual Boats Afloat Show, which claims to be the largest on-water boat display on the West Coast, will offer more than 200 power boats and 50 sailboats, worth more than $132 million.

For those seeking to straddle the line between power and sail, the show has two sail-assisted motor yachts that burn just one gallon of gas an hour. There also are several megayachts, a submarine and a houseboat.

In this highly cyclical industry, sales of new boats totaled $14.4 billion in 2007, down 5 percent from 2006, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

Dave Calhoun, a broker at Sunset Yacht Sales in Gig Harbor, said sales there are “definitely slower” than ever during his four-year stint there, especially with midpriced boats such as Bayliners and Sea Rays selling for between $20,000 and $60,000. Lower-priced boats, between $10,000 and $20,000, are selling pretty well, as are those costing $100,000 and more, he said.

“People aren’t used to the fuel prices, interest rates are higher, lending criteria are tougher, and there’s a lot of uncertainty about the economy,” Calhoun said. “Another broker here for 17 years says it hasn’t been like this since 9/11.” People who already own boats aren’t necessarily selling them now. “But I do think people are using their boats less, and they’re going more slowly to save money,” he said.

Boat makers, at least 35 of which are based in the Northwest, are trying to develop technology to keep their products attractive during straitened times.

For example, more than 100 manufacturers of inboard-engine boats between 34 and 70 feet long are using the Inboard Propulsion System, from Volvo Penta, which is claimed to be 30 percent more fuel efficient than conventional inboard drives, said Pat Kelley, owner of Blackfish Marine, a dealership with locations in Seattle, Anacortes and Vancouver, B.C.

The system also is said to reduce noxious emissions by 20 percent to 30 percent. Outboard engines, usually used to power smaller boats, have made great advances in fuel efficiency and emissions reductions, particularly through an emphasis on four-stroke technology, Kelley said.

The use of fuel-efficient outboards is one factor that has kept revenue at Glacier Bay Catamarans LLC, a boat maker in Monroe, from declining even beyond the 35 percent year-over-year downturn it has suffered, said Vice President of Sales Mark Mansfield.

But the higher cost of freight and key raw materials, such as petroleum-based fiberglass resin, has led makers to raise their own prices, which inevitably causes boat prices to rise, Mansfield said.

Sailboats, an obvious choice when fuel prices rise, are understood to require more skill than powerboats. Still, they’re selling very well, Sunset Yacht’s Calhoun said. “Some people are just getting into the sailing thing, but I also have to think it’s because they burn about a pint an hour when motoring,” he said.

Some boat buyers — even baby boomers, with more disposable income on average than younger buyers — are choosing smaller, less expensive models.

For example, buyers of 25-foot Ranger Tugs, made by Ranger Boat Co. in Kent, may originally have had their eyes on a 32-foot Nordic Tug, a more expensive boat made in Burlington, Ranger Vice President of Sales Jeff Messmer said.

Still, “the (manufacturers) that are really hurting are those that have sold to the younger buyers, who took loans,” Messmer said.

One of the Northwest’s largest dealers, Olympic Boat Centers, filed for protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in July. It was one of the largest dealers of boats made by Lake Forest, Ill.-based Brunswick Corp., with 19 locations in Washington, California and Canada.

In a statement in July, the company blamed the “sluggish retail boat market” for its bankruptcy, under which it continues to sell boats, though with liabilities of $50 million to $100 million and assets of only $10 million to $50 million.

Fewer companies are exhibiting at Boats Afloat this year, occupying roughly 182,000 square feet of space on the water versus last year’s all-time peak of 196,000 square feet, said Bergquist, the show’s producer. “I think companies are being careful of their budgets. Show fees, hotel stays, food, gas all add up to a big price tag to be in the show,” she said.

A free show last month featuring trailer boats may have siphoned off some dealers and manufacturers, she added. Despite the downturn, dealers said they’re optimistic that the show will produce good sales.

“The intelligent buyers know when to buy, so I gotta believe that at Boats Afloat, you’ll see more people buying instead of just looking than ever before,” Glacier Bay’s Mansfield said.

Bayliner Boats - Boat Part-Ownership Dealer Network

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Ocean Outboard Marine is known as the best, new and used boat dealer on Amelia Island

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from
North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. The Jacksonville Business Journal reported today that some Northeast Florida Boat Dealers have joined a part-ownership network.

Five boat dealers in Northeast Florida have joined a program that allows boaters to have partial ownership of a vessel.

Stuart-based MyBoatShares matches partial owners through a network of boat dealers. The program has added Haskell’s Marine, Jacksonville Yacht Sales and Atlantic Coast Marine in Jacksonville, as well as Ocean Outboard Marine in Amelia Island and Riverbend Marine in St. Augustine.

The program works through its network of dealers and the Internet to match up two to four would-be boat owners. MyBoatShares, through the dealers, handles storage, maintenance and repair of the boat.

The program also handles financing and loan repayment, insurance and the running of an online reservation system to help partial owners schedule the use of their boats.

“It’s a competitive advantage for us and a real benefit to today’s boaters who are weighed down by the rising costs of boat ownership,” said Buddy Haskell, president of Haskell Marine.

Glenn Enriquez, CEO of MyBoatShares, said partial ownership can allow boaters to get a larger boat for a smaller investment, an option increasingly attractive in a slow economy.

“With new boat sales declining over the past three years, due, in part, to a weak economy, boat dealers are looking for new ways to move inventory and improve margins,” Enriquez said. Bayliner Boats - Tips How to Measure a For a Bimini Top

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Here is helpful information on how to measure your boat for a new bimini top.

How to Measure Your Boat for a Bimini Top

Length - Measure the fore-to-aft length of the area you want to shade. (Note: leave enough length behind and in front of the Bimini top to secure the attachment straps).

Width - Measure the distance between mounting points where the frame attaches to the gunwale. IMPORTANT: Mounting point must be exactly the same distance fore and aft.

Height - Standing in the boat, measure straight up from the mounting point to reach the desired top height. This distance between mounting point and tip height will be the frame height.

Consider how the top height will affect your movements. Be aware: the higher the top height, the less stable it may be on your boat.

The information provided here has been reproduced courtesy of Attwood Marine. Wholesale Marine reproduced this information on 08/29/08. Please keep in mind that other Bimini Top Manufacturers may suggest different ways of measuring for their Bimini Tops. You should always follow the manufactures recommendations.

Bayliner Boats - What to Expect from Boat Dealers in 2009

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. What to expect from boat dealers for the 2009 boating season.

Most boat dealers say they are ordering fewer 2009 models than they normal would, while at the same time most manufacturers have cut production to handle the reduction in orders.

“Their inventory levels have built up,” said Phil Keeter, president of the Marine Retailers Association of America. “Back in March and April, when they were selling a little bit of stuff it looked like levels weren’t going to be too bad, but then when we kept getting flatter and flatter and flatter, then the inventory that looked like it was manageable at one point in time, now that inventory is larger than what it needs to be.”

Some dealers are ordering up to 40 percent fewer units for the new model year. Even those dealers who say their current inventory levels are acceptable, are purchasing fewer 2009 models.

“The situation the marine industry finds itself in is not one that happened overnight,” said Larry Russo, Sr., of Russo Marine, a Sea Ray and Boston Whaler dealer in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “If dealers have been paying attention to the changing times starting three or four years ago, they would have ratcheted down purchase commitments to ensure that inventory levels would meet demand and not exceed demand.”

Even so, Russo said he expects to order about 20 percent fewer 2009 units than he purchased last year, despite experiencing a 33 percent increase in business over last year.

Tom Stidham, of Norris Marine in Norman, Okla., sad his inventory levels are “within the acceptable range,” adding, “If I have one (boat) I have one more than I want this time of year, but we’re on par with prior years.”

Stidham, who sells Bayliner, Tracker and Crownline, also ordered fewer 2009 models this year, and said he’s still selling mostly 2008s at this point.

Alan Bohling, of Seattle Boat Company, said that the region one does business in has a large effect on their inventory situation. The Seattle area, he said, had cool weather through June, which is normally a peak selling season.

Due to a “perfect storm” of cool weather, high fuel prices and the general economy, Bohling said his business was off by 40 percent this year - even with adjusting his orders down 25 percent. That’s an unprecedented drop for him.
Therefore, he too will be ordering fewer 2009 models.

Even Clearwater, Fla.-based MarineMax, the nation’s largest boat retailer with 88 retail locations is drastically reducing orders this year. In a July conference call with analysts, company executives said they planned to order about 40 percent fewer 2009 models.

Most dealers said they were not feeling pressure from their manufacturers to take on more units than they wanted, though Keeter said he’s heard of the opposite scenario as well.

“(Manufacturers are) doing the same thing we are,” Stidham, in Oklahoma, noted. “They’re trying to make an inventory correction so that we don’t get this thing totally out of balance.”

Russo, the Sea Ray and Boston Whaler dealer, praised Brunswick for shutting down plants this summer to clear out the pipeline.

“Anytime a company can shut off the supply faucet, the marketplace benefits by that because it gives everyone a chance to catch up,” he said. “If they didn’t do that, they’d be sitting with way too many boats trying to force them down our throat.” Thanks to; Boat Trader Insider - Official boat blog of Boat Trader Online: Boat Dealers Purchasing Fewer 2009 Models

Bayliner Boats - Port Credit In-Water Boat Show a Big Success

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. News out of Port Credit, Ontario the In-Water Boat Show was a huge success this summer.

Boaters and dreamers alike flocked to the 18th annual Port Credit In-Water Boat Show that ran from August 22th to 24th, 2008 making it their largest show ever! A beautiful weekend, brokers were writing deals until after 8pm!

As an outcome of the event, The Store Mason’s Chandlery handed out fund raising charity cheques to Ontario Sailing’s Able Sail program, Broad Reach Foundation, and Carol, who was a walker in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer event.

The show featured power boats from Carver, Cruisers Yachts, Four Winns, Bayliner, Mainship, Monterey, Regal, Sabre and Silverton. The largest boat there was a 59’ Marquis!

In sail boats there were examples from Beneteau, Bavaria, Catalina, C&C, Delphia, Hunter, Hansa, Jeanneau and for the first time in Canada, the crowds saw the Lagoon 380 Catamaran.

Other Show features included the popular Speakers Theatre brought to you by The Store. There were also Land displays with PCOC exams on site, Canadian Border Services, Services Canada, Coast Guard, clothing, gifts, charters, insurance, BoatersLiveAuction.com advisor, magazines, Canadian Hydrographic Services, Sail companies, fall course sign-ups and more! Paul and Sheryl Shard were very popular this year, both at their boat (a Southerly 42) and during their seminars.

One of many new tents this year was the Consignment Tent, sponsored by BoatersLiveAuction.com. It was highly successful, raising over $850 for local Youth Sailing Programs and Sick Kids Hospital.

Andrew Papierz, one of the many people who brought in items to be sold at the tent, donated 100% of his items’ selling price to these charities! In fact, the Consignment Tent was so successful they’re doing it again next year!

After boarding the boats and visiting the exhibitors booths, folks were invited to relax in the Boat Show refreshment garden, sponsored by the Port Credit Lion’s Club. They enjoyed the view of Port Credit Harbour and listened to the Blues featuring Virgil of the South-Side Shuffle. They also enjoyed hotdogs and hamburgers from Hank’s Franks and sandwiches and wraps from the Waterside Inn.

Bayliner Boats - Boat Ownership and Cottages, a Perfect Match

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Boat ownership and cottages, always make for a perfect match.

Ask anyone who doesn’t own recreational property what their favourite memories are of visiting friends with a cabin at a lake and the answer will probably be “heading out on the boat.”

Face it, boat ownership and recreational property are a perfect match.

What could be better than zooming around the lake on water skis before returning to your cabin for a quiet evening with family and friends.

Considering the busy lives that many people lead these days it’s no surprise that boating has become so popular, says Marty Langerhorst, a salesperson with Renfrew Marine in Calgary.

“A lot of people are looking for balance in their lifestyle, and they look at boating as a way to get together with their family,” says Langerhorst. “What better way than to get out on a lake, do some tubing, water skiing or wake boarding?”

He says with more and more people buying cabins near a lake, or an RV lot in a lakeside community, the boat market is making big waves.

“Boats that we sell go into B.C., all over Alberta, into Saskatchewan. There’s no sense being on the water if you don’t have a boat.”

Langerhorst says while some people think boats are expensive, there are plenty of options that are very affordable.

He says you can buy a 2008 Bayliner 175 boat that seats seven people and has enough power to pull a water skier at prices starting from about $13,000.

Check out these Bayliner 175 boat reviews from boat dealers and boat owners

There are high-end boats that cost more than $100,000, Langerhorst says the bulk of boats sold at Renfrew and the other six stores in the organization are in the $13,000-to-$60,000 price range.

“You can buy a really, really nice boat with a tower and big motor and special outdrive - a 21-foot boat really well decked out for $40,000 to $45,000.”

Langerhorst says many people also don’t realize that you can finance the purchase of a boat using only the boat itself for security, due to the fact that boats hold their value for many years.

He says a boat dealership can usually assist you in getting bank financing for rates that typically might be seven per cent for five years, with the financing stretched over 10, 15 or even 20 years.

There are many different styles of boats, so Langerhorst says people need to consider what they want to do with a boat, where it will be used and how many people they want to carry.

With that information, a salesperson can show people the type of boat that best meets their needs and fits into their budget.

The most popular styles of boats these days are bow riders, which are general purpose boats good for everything from towing a tube to cruising the lake, he says.

Sun deck boats are modified bow riders with larger space in the front for people to lounge and relax.

Tournament boats are specifically aimed at people seriously into water skiing, wakeboarding or the latest craze, surfing the wake behind a boat.

Deck boats are like floating patios on pontoons, which Langerhorst jokes are popular with people who want to sip mint julips while touring the lake.

With there being many different aspects to buying and owning a boat, the National Marine Manufacturers Association has created a website where Canadians can get informed: www.DiscoverBoating.ca. Thanks toGerald Vander Pyl, For the Calgary Herald, Buyers hear boating’s ‘wake’-up call

Bayliner Boats - Emirates Boat Show International

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Abu Dhabi will be showcased as an emerging centre for leisure as the capital hosts the first Emirates Boat Show International.

The exhibition, which will run from November 25 to 27, is being hosted by Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADMISC).

The boat show will attract more than 150 exhibitors, and 200 boats will be on display in the water and onshore at ADIMSC.

Visitors will be able to view a range of the latest leisure marine products, from multi-million dollar motor yachts to jet skis, wakeboarding boats and equipment, sailing dinghies and diving gear, marine accessories and electronics. The show will be open to trade and the public.

The boat show has also secured bookings from some of the best known international brands include Aicon, Azimuth, Bayliner, Beneteau Yachts, Cabo, Carver, Doral, Elegance, Four Winns, Gulf Craft, Hatteras, Jeanneau, Larson, Mastercraft, Maxum, Palm Marine, Princess Yachts, SeaRay, Silver Craft, Tige and Wellcraft.

Ahmed Al Romaithi, Member of the Executive Committee of ADMISC, said the show would reflect the vast amount of marine-related development and infrastructure planned or under construction for the emirate.

Saeed Hareb, Chairman of organiser Knotika Holding, said: “Abu Dhabi is an obvious choice for a boat show as it is the richest of the oil-laden United Arab Emirates, has a large expatriate population and is aiming to transform itself into a global tourist destination.

“Abu Dhabi benefits from a cosmopolitan outlook in a politically stable country with a liberal economy.
