Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating Industry. Here is a must read article on boat safety from our local paper, The PeterboroughExaminer.

Each year more than 8 million boaters take to Canada’s waterways but unfortunately not all survive.

However, there’s good news,

According to a Canadian Red Cross and Lifesaving Society of Canada report, 87 per cent of boating-related deaths are preventable.

A starting point for boaters to insure a fun and safe day on the water is to obtain their Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).

On April 1, 1999 the Canadian Coast Guard enacted the Competency of Operators Craft Regulations. The regulations have been phased in over ten years and as of Sept. 15, 2009 all operators must obtain their PCOC. Boatsmart Canada president Cameron Taylor says the law requires all operators of powered vessels fitted with a motor, including Personal Watercraft and powered sailboats to carry the card or face a fine of up to $320.

There’s almost 5 million registered boaters in Ontario and 3 million of them still need their PCOC.

Explains Taylor, urging boaters to visit www.boatsmartexam.com and take the exam before hitting the waters for the July long weekend.

“The study guide prepares you on 149 knowledge points that you should learn to be safe on the water and you are tested on 36 points,” says Taylor.

“By passing the exam you are proving that you are confident boater.”

Although all important, some key knowledge points in the guide include: navigation and right away on the water, safety equipment, boating terminology, emergency preparedness and weather conditions. The exam cost $45 dollars and can be done in 15 to 30 minutes notes Taylor, who also stressed the need to always wear a lifejacket or PFD and probably.

“We just want boaters to boat with common sense and confience and go out enjoy a fun day of boating,” says Taylor. Thanks to http://www.mykawartha.com/news/article/30734 for this.
