West Marine’s Green Product Contest Update
West Marine has announced its second annual “Green Product of the Year” contest. As part of West Marine’s mission to improve and protect marine habitats and reduce its impact on the environment, West Marine will award one prize of $10,000 to the designated Official Winner. The competition is open to individual manufacturers, distributors and/or inventors of boating products. The entries will be judged on the following criteria:
- Effective: Is the product as effective as competitive products in the marketplace?
- Economical: Is the product priced competitively with existing solutions or similar products in the market? This can be measured on a per-use basis or a cost-justified basis (use of the product will save $xx).
- Environmental Impact: How does the use of this product benefit the environment? Due to the diversity of product categories, this could be expressed in reduced fuel consumption, reduction of chemicals of concern, reduced air or water pollution, or other metric.
- Degree of Innovation: Was the product introduced to the marketplace in 2009 or 2010? Is the product different from anything else in the marketplace? Does the product incorporate new materials or technologies?
- Verification of claims: All environmental or efficacy claims must be verifiable and substantiated by an independent third party. Entry must provide actual data, test results, laboratory analyses, etc.
- Compliance with Official Rules: Does the Entry and Entrant in all respects comply with these Official Rules?
Participants are able to enter the contest as well as view the complete rules and entry requirements by completing an entry form at www.westmarine.com/green between March 20, 2010 and October 1, 2010.
Waterway Guide Report
The publishers of Waterway Guide publications say they have seen an increase in sales for the first quarter of 2010.
“For the period of January through March, we have seen sales of our Chesapeake Bay Guide increase 16 percent over last year, with the Atlantic ICW Guide increasing 11 percent and our Southern Guide increasing a solid 21 percent,” the company said in a statement.
“Our Northern and Great Lakes Guides are on par with 2009 sales, but the boating season in those areas is just beginning to awaken from a long cold winter,” the statement said.
