Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. A fun day was had by all at the Pontoon Boat Parade of Lights in Holiday Harbor at Canyon Lake.

It was cold and damp, but last weekend’s storm held off long enough for the Parade of Lights to wind its way through the community waterways.

There was a new sweepstakes winner in this year’s Parade of Lights. For several years, parade enthusiasts and neighbors Tom Janke and Tim Janes have swapped off on the title; however, this year’s sweepstakes award went to Dave Martilla with his Christmas tree towering above a pontoon boat.

Tom Janke was still in the running, taking 1st place in the open boat category with his Grinch-themed ski boat and 1st place in the pontoon boat category with his “Old Fashioned Christmas.” Second place in the open boat category went to Art Caldwell with “Lite Brite Hopeful Christmas;” 3rd place went to Howard Hellman with his lights-covered ski boat.

A pontoon boat decorated by Dan Davies and Cary Benham to look like a sleigh with Christmas tree took 2nd place in the pontoon boat category; Dan Walsh’s Santa-commandeered pontoon took 3rd in that category.

In the entries provided by clubs, Tye Lockerbe-Sawyer and the Street Carts Club took 1st place with their “Jimmy Buffet Christmas” pontoon float. Second place went to Jay Fitzpatrick and the Ski Club.

Winning the Judges’ Trophy was Greg Cassidy’s “Party on the Lake” pontoon; winning the Commodore’s Trophy was Mark Thomas’ “Snowman.” Leading the parade was the Yacht Club’s “Green Dragon,” driven by Commodore John Petersen.

In all, there were 14 floats in the parade. An awards ceremony was held at Holiday Harbor at the conclusion of the parade. The Parade of Lights Committee included Carl Farris, Richard Del Nostro, Bob Clark, Judy Weaver, Carol Ferrieri and Eileen Hultz. North American Waterway and Used Pontoon Boats thanks; The Friday Flyer, December 19, 2008 – Article: Boat owners came through for Parade of Lights

Santa chose a pontoon boat over a sleigh at the 23rd Annual Bonita Springs Holiday Boat Parade on Saturday night.

At a balmy 68 degrees, the weather was far from frightful and the boats were all quite delightful as thousands of spectators lined the banks of the Imperial River on Saturday night to “ooh” and “aah” at the maritime spectacle that was the 23rd annual Bonita Springs Boat Parade.

Decked out in their seasonal best, 18 brightly decorated boats launched from the Fish House Restaurant on Bonita Beach Road at 6 p.m., bobbed up the river to near Flossmoor Drive and West Terry Street, then headed back downriver to complete the circuitous 5-mile route.

The shouts of merry revelers rang out from the dock at the Fish House and were quickly returned by their seafaring counterparts.

“Merry Christmas!” yelled one. “Ho, ho, ho!” came the reply.

Marking a first this year for the boat parade was its sponsorship by the Bonita Springs Rotary Club Noon. The Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event for the prior 22 years.

Vincent Modarelli is serving as this year’s president of the Rotary Club. “What we have in Bonita Springs is ‘government-lite,’ ” Modarelli said as live music pounded from huge speakers on the dock and happy partiers clad in Santa hats downed draft beers in quick succession. “The city can’t take on all these events because it’s not equipped like someplace like Fort Myers is, so we’re trying to take these things on ourselves. If people want to see events like this one continue, they should really think about getting involved with some of their community groups.”

Modarelli said the annual boat parade has long been a night for residents to let their hair down and celebrate the season. “It seems like just about every house along the parade route is having a party tonight,” he said. “It’s just a great night for everyone to participate and have a good time and enjoy the season.”

Among those participating Saturday night was a group of vacationers from Illinois. Mike Piper of Chicago said the weather back home was an icy 11 degrees when he left last week — with 4 inches of snow covering the ground.

“It’s good to see that even without the snow and cold weather, Floridians know how to celebrate Christmas,” Piper’s wife, Linda, said. Another member of the Pipers’ party, Phyllis Muchow of Lincoln, Ill., said the weather back home hadn’t improved much since the group made the journey South.

“I got a call this morning from a friend telling me it was 12 degrees today,” she said with a laugh. Muchow’s husband, Paul, said Saturday night’s boat parade couldn’t have been held up North, for obvious reasons. “Maybe if we used snowplows instead of boats,” he quipped.

Part-time North Naples residents Bonnie Meath-Lang and her husband, Harry, are on sabbatical from their professorships at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Meath-Lang said the weather in New York wasn’t much better than the weather in Illinois.

“I got an e-mail this morning telling me it was 33 degrees and snowing,” she said. “Right now, I think that we should all be very thankful that we’re in Florida.
“You’d really be taking your life in your hands if you tried to do this anywhere else.” Used Pontoon Boats thanks; Visitors: A boat parade in Bonita beats parade of snowplows in Illinois : Bonita : Naples Daily News

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats-Pontoon Parts along with news and views from the boating industry.
German outboard manufacturer Torqeedo has just introduced a new electric outboard suitable for pontoon boats and catamarans, which they claim is more efficient than any previous.

The new Cruise 4.0 R was introduced at this year’s METS in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and is available from a distributor in Queensland (see end of story). With an overall efficiency of more than 50%, the manufacturers claim that the Cruise 4.0 R converts supplied battery power better into propulsion than any other outboard. This means that users get more power and range from the same battery supply.

The new, powerful Cruise model runs on 48 V. Offering 97 kg of thrust, the Cruise 4.0 R has the thrust equivalent to a 9.9 hp internal combustion outboard. More importantly, the propulsive power, measured as speed times thrust after all losses including propeller losses, compares to an 8 hp gas outboard in displacement mode.

‘When talking about electric propulsion for boats, battery power is always the limiting factor. Therefore it’s paramount to use the limited battery power as efficiently as possible,’ said Torqeedo managing partner Christoph Ballin.

‘For electric outboards, overall efficiencies range between 20% for trolling motors and up to 35% for stronger electric propulsion motors. The overall efficiencies for internal combustion outboards are significantly lower than that,’ said Ballin. ‘We don’t know of any other outboard that even gets close to the efficiency levels we offer.’

Designed specifically for remote steering and throttle, the new, lightweight Cruise 4.0 R offers further unique advantages for boaters. An integrated board computer combines information from the motor, the batteries and a built-in GPS. The board computer lets boaters have their battery charge, speed and remaining range at current speed always under control.

The new Cruise 4.0 R is a good choice for boats on green lakes, pontoon boats, dinghies, sailboats and catamarans. It operates on a 48 V lead-gel or AGM battery bank or two high-performance lithium-manganese batteries available from Torqeedo’s Power series.

Each electric outboard comes standard with a cable set, fuse, main-switch, remote throttle control with integrated board computer and magnetic on/off switch as well as a link-arm to connect to standard steering systems.
